Interlocking network loops?

Anyone,

I have run across network designs that are built like rat's nests with connections that seem to go from one side of the network to the other side of the network through the middle. How does one make those connections in the "rebuild" interface? I have tried grabbing a node in the foreground and connecting to a node I see through a loop of nodes in the background and it seems to connect through the loop, but when I change the perspective the connection is suddenly outside of that loop. No matter what I try, the interface seems to keep flattening and spreading everything out so you can't build anything intentionally three dimensional.

Any tips, hints or suggestions?

There's certainly an art form to it! While a truly 3D network isn't possible, you can make some truly deceiving looking networks, great for when the attacker only looks at the default view. :P

One of my favorite tricks for "threading the needle" is to temporarily attach a netConnection to one end and use it to "pull" a node in a specific direction. Nodes can then be "secured" at the other end by attaching a node. You can also prepare a group of nodes to attach, which will limit the direction in which the network "rests".

Another tip would be to hold the node in position before you attach it to something. Once in position, quickly make a connection, and then grab the node again before it rests in an unwanted spot! If you can keep it held in place, the surrounding nodes will attempt to "rest" around it. You can also use this technique by rotating the camera before grabbing, allowing you to alter the angle at which you make the small adjustments. This can sometimes let you place nodes seemingly on top of other ones - such as visually hiding a Scanner behind a Code Gate ... just don't let the node slip away!

Thanks, Luminaar. I'll try your kung fu and see if it will make me stronger.
