Guardians

Post by Fantöm » Wed May 25, 2016 8:43 am

Let's say you have two guardians, both connected to one node. Do their "skill" (they protect the nodes next to them) add up on the one node they are connected to?
Away until (at least end June but maybe) mid July, so hack me :D and leave a message :)
EDIT : I am actually leaving this Beta, good luck for the devs and have fun hacking!

Yes they do add up together, you can sometimes see 2 "ices" on nodes next to two Guardians. I think there still might be a small bug though, on code-gates if I remember correctly where this did not seem to always work this way, before the gate protection itself is cracked.

Is a guardian pure defense?
How will they work together if I connect a guardian and a turret to a node?
The Guardian will try to keep it from being taken, then the turret will try to free it when it is?

Gary, a guardian is a node that doesn't attack by itself (so it's a white node) and protects the surrounding nodes (only the ones he is connected to directly) by giving a protection effect every 3 or 4 seconds.

On guardians, what is the best way of connecting them? direct to 3 turrets, 1 black ice, and sentry (of which the turrets are directly on a scanner)?
I fear that if i connect it to too many neighbouring nodes, it becomes too easy a target...

@oraclepwns

It certainly does become a target, but the last possible target by single target attacks, like beam cannon (obviously no defense against shuriken).

By the same token, if it is linked to so many offensive node types, it does stand to quickly be taken back over by any remaining offensive nodes. It's a double edged sword, but worth the risk, in my opinion. Slot up every one you can with a guardian.

A Guardian has a low threat level, so if the security nodes in front are connected together, they will attack each other first not the Guardian. If they are not connected, then the Guardian will probably be attacked and your security taken from behind.

However, in both cases once the bottle neck of the scanner has been broken and a sentry/turret has been taken, the attacker will hold a node with a high fire wall and should take over that position anyway. In terms of what's best - it's a matter of option. Personally I don't interconnect that much between defence nodes, because then it allows the attacker to attack from multiple sides, once one node has been taken. I like to 'dead end' my defence nodes as much as possible. The only issue with that is once they are taken, they are taken and your defence is then one man down, so to speak.

As I said, matter of option.

I've just noticed Guardians dont apply their buff to nodes that are upgrading. This seems incorrect, as it's the Guardian node doing the protecting. If the upgraded node wasn't allowed to accept upgrades, that wouldn't be consistant with other nodes being able to upload antivirus to it (even though the AV is useless once it gets there)

Thanks for the input, it's a valid point. We will think about it for the future updates.
